This is a great news when I read The Star Online today. This will be a great move by our government on the telco number. Many of us not understand the rules and regulations but I will teach you how.

Example : You have this Maxis 012-333 5050 then if you change to the Celcom number of 019, so you can retain the 019-333 5050. The question is when you change to the new number, what will happen if the Celcom number has the current owner?

The number portability system for cellular phones will be available by the first quarter of next year, Energy, Water and Communications Minister Datuk Seri Dr Lim Keng Yaik said.

He said the system allowed mobile phone users to retain their network provider number, even if they changed service providers.

Dr Lim was speaking to reporters after launching the MiTV’s new brand name, U Mobile, and its 3G network 018 here yesterday.

The system was supposed to be implemented by the end of this year but the ministry had to postpone it, as some telcos were not prepared for it, added Dr Lim.

“The system will include 015, the network that allows users to make phone calls through the Internet,” he said.

He also said he had ordered Telekom Malaysia to come up with a proposal to provide fibre optic broadband connection.
