I am sure most of you out there know what is email. Is there anyone here who doesn’t know what email is? If you really don’t know, it’s never too late to know now. I will spend a few seconds here to explain what email is. Email stands for electronic mail. It’s just like any other letter you send, but email is sent electronically via the Internet. It is an effective means of communication for both business and personal use.

Therefore, it’s good that you keep checking your email daily or even hourly so that people can reach you easily. I know you will be thinking, why do we use email when there is phone or handphone? Well, no doubt phone is important. But, I personally love to communicate via email. Verbally, we may have misunderstood the conversation over the phone. So, having a black and white copy is always a better option.

What can email do?

After some brief explanations on email’s definition, let’s get to the gist of email. Do you know that newsletter is sort of related to email? Well, people (especially business owners) tend to send newsletters via email to their newsletter subscribers. Newsletter is a type of publication that consists of latest news, general information, upcoming events or promotions and even articles or tutorials (just like the newsletter you are reading now). The purpose of newsletter is to disseminate information via email. However, if this purpose has been misused by the senders, it will become spam, which is hated by almost everyone. Not only does this spam cause problem to the receivers, it will also cause problem to the webhosts. Wondering how it will create havoc to everyone including the webhosts? Let me unveil the truth behind the scene.

Email and its aftermath

I am not saying that you cannot send email but what I am saying here is that emails if being channelled wrongly will eventually become spam. Spam as it is notoriously known does not come in small scale. I practically receive around 50 over spam emails daily! Believe it or not, it’s definitely a nuisance. Now, imagine that, if one person receives 50 spam emails daily, so, by the time all the spam emails reach all the recipients in the mailing list, the mail server that processes these spam emails will be “exhausted”. When mail server is “exhausted”, this will affect all the other shared hosting owners where their hosting accounts are hosted under the same mail server as the hosting account owner who contributes to this chaos!

On the other hand, for companies with employees more than 40 people, the situation that I described above will also occur although emails that are sent out are not spam emails. Why is that? Simply because the email usage and its traffic will be huge too. Mail server in the shared hosting environment will not be capable of handling such traffic. Other shared hosting account owners or the so-called “neighbors” of this big company’s hosting account will suffer as in website is loading very slowly and having problems receiving emails as email spooling will occur at the mail server.
